Thursday Sky

We had a nice shower Thursday evening, the first rain we’ve had in, well, I can’t remember. A long time. The temperature dropped 20 degrees to 64F in just a few minutes. We had a high of 89F on Thursday, according to our thermometer. It’s supposed to reach into the mid-90s by the weekend.

We ended up with a half an inch of rain, and a rainbow.

The fainter, secondary bow was visible. I zoomed to try to get a better shot.

  1. It’s always so wonderful to see a rainbow. Love seeing that secondary bow too. The temps are really warm there. Nice to have it drop to the 60s so fast.

  2. Notice how the colors are reversed in a secondary rainbow, something early painters didn’t always recognize. (I wonder what they do during a triple rainbow?)

  3. Robin — It is nice to see, a sight we haven’t seen for quite a while. We haven’t had rain in a long, long time. Tropical storm Alberto is supposed to bring us some rain in the next few days.

Paul — Yeah, that’s the sort of detail an early painter might miss, since he would probably have to rely on memory to get the colors right. A triple rainbow, which apparently is extremely rare, should have the order of colors the same as the primary. The secondary rainbow reverses the order of the primary, and the third bow would reverse that order, thus yielding the original order. The reason a triple rainbow is rarely seen is that each succeeding bow is dimmer than the previous. The secondary bow in my photo is pretty faint. A third bow would be much fainter. It’s probably actually there, but next to impossible to actually see.
