Bloom?

I just noticed our first blooms of the year.

crocusesThese little crocuses are our earliest bloomers. They are so small they are easy to miss. These are under a dogwood next to our driveway. More surprising to me was the appearance of daffodils sprouting in the island next to the driveway.

daffodilsThey aren’t blooming yet, but you can see where the blooms are going to appear.

Does this mean we’re going to have spring this year?

  1. Mark: Our earliest bloomers are snowdrops here in the northern Piedmont, but no sign of them yet. I don’t think we’ve gotten above freezing for three weeks, so they’re probably still locked in the frozen earth. We haven’t had much snow this year so far (knock on wood), but temperatures have been way below normal since the beginning of January.

  2. Nice to see those early flowers and the promise of daffodils there. Hope you do have a real spring there. Here in the coastal temperate zone of California, we have been seeing daffodils and tulips blooming, and lots of buds everywhere on everything. Spring is so wonderful!

  3. Scott — We’ve had some cold weather, but it has been pretty mild here lately. I guess that’s why the daffodils are coming out.

Robin — The presence of an ocean can really make a difference in the climate.
