Wednesday evening, without any warning, it started raining hard. Soon there was thunder and lightning, and then some small hail.
The sky took on a yellowish-pink glow at sunset.
I had to let the camera use its flash to get the sky to look anything like it did to the eye. The flash caught rain drops, and a hummingbird leaving our feeder (at the left above the red plastic flower on the feeder).
It has been raining for about two hours; the gauge shows 1.12 inches so far, and the weather radar shows a lot of rain to our west.
I don’t know whether Robin’s comment to the last post has anything to do with the rain, but I’m going to ask that she make the same wish the next time we seem to be stuck in a dry rut.
So happy to read that you got so much rain. That’s really such great news. If I had anything to do with it, I’d be begging for rain here in California. Enjoy all that grand water!
We were certainly grateful for what we got, but we still need more. I know you all do out there, too, so I hope you get rain, rain and more rain.
We’d gone for about 1-1/2 weeks with no rain in the northern Piedmont and it was getting pretty dry here, too, Mark. But, we got about an inch last night (Thursday night), which was welcome. Sorry the same can’t be said for Robin Andrea in California. I heard on the radio this morning that parts of California were actually measurably rising. Groundwater is so depleted because of the drought that the earth’s crust is rebounding by 0.2-0.5 inches because the weight of the water has been removed. Amazing!
Scott — Our “drought” is actually pretty localized here, and when I say localized, I mean something like neighborhoods. The airport, which is the official reporting station for Rome, is not far away but they have had a good bit more rain than us.
