Cats aren’t afraid of heights, but I’m afraid enough for both of us.
Chloe climbs up on this high frame on the deck to get away from Smokey or Sylvester. Sometimes she actually runs along on top of it. I can hardly watch her. It’s more than 20 feet to the ground.
Leah: The image of Chloe gives makes my palms sweat with nervousness, too. Until recently, we had to separate our “old” cat, who was restricted to the first floor of our house, from the “new” cat, who had free reign of the second floor. The two were separated from one another by a “baby gate” at the top of the stairs. The problem is that our staircase is pretty “grand” (think Tara here), with the second floor looking directly down onto the first floor about 12 feet below. Well, “new” cat was unsatisfied being restricted to the second floor and would leap up onto the polished, smooth wood banister alongside the baby gate–right over the drop to the first floor–and make her way around the baby gate by walking on the banister. Every time we saw this, we were sure she would kill herself or a major vet bill was on the horizon, but she never fell. (Now the gate’s been removed; the two cats have come to an uneasy detente–after 3 years.)
They really do trust themselves and their sure-footedness. It is definitely hard to watch. Nice photo.
Hey Scott,
Cats can really get into “high places”.
Robin,
Thanks, that’s for sure!
